About CalmWatt

CalmWatt is a small independent publication covering home backup power — portable power stations, solar generators, and the equipment households rely on when the grid goes down.

We exist because this category is unusually hard to shop. Specifications are inconsistent between manufacturers, the same battery capacity is quoted three different ways, and safety data sits in government PDFs that nobody has ever assembled into a usable form.

Everything here is published under an organisational byline — CalmWatt Research for data work, The CalmWatt Editorial Team for correspondence. We do not invent individual expert personas, and we do not attribute work to people who do not exist.

What we do. We compile reference datasets from primary sources, transcribe manufacturer specifications into comparable units, and write model-to-model comparisons that answer a specific purchase question.

What we do not do. We do not run a laboratory. We do not buy equipment and put it through physical tests. Where a claim would require testing we did not perform, we say so instead of implying otherwise. Our methodology page explains exactly what our process can and cannot support.

Some of our buying content contains affiliate links. Our affiliate disclosure explains how that works. Our reference datasets carry no affiliate links at all.
